June 27th,2004
Raleigh,NC

The International Flag Football Federation held their fourth World Cup qualifing event for the 2004 season this past weekend in Raleigh,NC. Teams as far as Texas traveled to the tournament. Several teams are traveling early this years in hopes of qualifing for the 6th Annual World Cup Extravaganza which will be held in the USA for the first time in 3 years. Only 80 teams will be allowed to participate in the Open Inviational tournament which will be played in February Fri,Sat and Sunday at a date and location to be announced in July. Guatemala’s Vicky Mendizabal who is currently in the USA assisiting with the tournaments states"having the World Cup in the USA makes it more appealing and affordable for International teams. I know my team from Guatemala and Panama will be present for Womens teams this year"
In the 7Man No Contact Championship it was a shootout as hometown favorites Blincos edged out the Scatbacks of McAllen TX 44-41 for the Title. The Scatbacks traveled over 1500 miles to qualify for the World Cup Invitational Tournament.

The Scatbacks  brought a quick and explosive team to Raleigh, NC for the 2004 World Cup tour stop.  Their competitor in the championship game was Blinco's Sports Bar from Raleigh, NC.  Blinco's received the ball first and worked the ball down the field quickly to a first and goal but the Scatbacks stopped Blinco's on 4th and goal.  The Scatbacks drove the ball down the field with their double quarterback schemes and with their elusiveness.  They scored on a dump (don't know the player's name #1, we just called him hips) and an impressive run to go up 7-0.  From that point on neither team could stop the other but the Scatbacks held the advantage on extra points 21-19.  The Scatbacks were going in for what looked to be another TD (and they would get the ball first in the second half) when Blinco's picked off a pass before halftime.  Blinco's took the ball and scored quickly and the half ended Blinco's 25 Scatbacks 21.

The Scatbacks received the ball first in the second half and scored in 3 plays to go back ahead 28-25.  That would be their last lead of the game.  Blinco's threw a bomb to Jimmy Grissett who scored 5 TD's in the game to go up 31-28.  On the insuing drive, Leslie Epps of Blinco's intercepted a pass and Blinco's capitalized and scored to go up 37-28.  With time running out the Scatbacks scored again to make the score 37 to 35.  The game was intense but neither defense could stop the other's offense.  Blinco's and Scatbacks traded scores again to make the score 44-41 but there was still an onsides kick and over a minute left in the game.  It all came down to a 4th and 1 with 53 seconds left.  Blinco's quarterback, Tim Kilpatrick, eluded the rush and ran for a first down that ended the game.
