Overview of Flag Football in N C

Prior to 1986, to the best of my knowledge, there was only one adult flag football league playing in North Carolina outside of the college game or on military leagues. That league was located in Charlotte and directed by Al Kelly. It played 9 man contact.

The Carolina Flag Football League was formed in 1986 by Tim Langdon and Jerry Sorrell. It was later reorganized as the United States Flag Football League and played 8 man screen flag football to distinguish itself from the 7 man college game. The USFFL is now one of the oldest and strongest leagues in the state.

The North Carolina Flag Football Association was formed in 1988 to promote and develop flag football leagues throughout the State. The first North Carolina State Flag Football Championship was held at Garner Sr. High School in 1988.
