Two Old Men and One Crown
Return
Two old men and one crown ...
I remember watching the 1970 AFC Championship game between the Baltimore Colts
and Oakland Raiders ... the caption in the newspaper the next day read ...
"Two Old Men and One Crown" ... the Colts and Raiders were led by the leagues
two oldest quarterbacks - 38 year old Johnny Unitas and 43 tear old George
Blanda ... the Colts advanced to the Super Bowl that year and defeated Dallas.
Sunday, in USFFL league action at the Poole Road Rugby Complex, two players
took the field representing over a century of life - St. Lawrence Homes'
center Bob Ohman and Cardinal's blocking back Tim Langdon. Ohman still plays
the middle as well as any center in the league and Langdon is well known for
playing on knees held together with rolls of Duct Tape. Together they are
charter members of the USFFL and have the two oldest teams in the league.
Ohman is playing in his 17th season. Langdon is playing in his 18th USFFL
season and 31st overall. The 28 team league features many area college players
from NCCU, NCSU, UNC, DUKE and Wake Forest among others.
The match up Sunday between undefeated teams lived up to expectations with St.
Lawrence edging out the Cardinals with 1:15 to play in the game by the score
of 18 to 14.
